The seven–to date–Wingspan Conference Reports are must-reads for those mental health clinicians who want to be more culturally competent in their work with firefighter population, as well as those seeking to become more involved with the mental health needs of fire departments and firefighters in their communities. These reports, IMHO, represent the progression and development of fire departments and the fire service in general over the past 58 years.

The original Wingspread Conference was held in February 1966 at the Wingspread Conference Center in Racine, Wisconsin and was sponsored by the Johnson Foundation. Eleven people participated in the event. This Conference was instrumental in leading to the establishment of today’s United States Fire Administration and its National Fire Academy.

Wingspread II was held at the Wingspread Conference Center in March of 1976. This conference occurred after the publication of America Burning in 1973 and the creation of the National Fire Prevention and Control Administration (NFPCA) in 1974. The NFPCA transitioned into the United States Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Fire Academy. Ten people participated in the conference.
