Firefighters have a unique culture and are exposed to cumulative trauma over the course of their careers. Few psychologists understand the needs of this population and a small amount fire departments include the valuable resources that professional psychology can offer. The Fire Service Psychology Association was developed to bridge the gap between these two professions by empowering mental health providers through cultural competence link, demonstrating the value of professional psychology in the fire service, as well as building psychological research on the needs of firefighters and their families. Our vision is to optimize firefighters performance on and off the job as well as create access to specialized psychological services unique to this population.
